Established in 1950, Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "GMC"), is a large state-owned enterprise directly supervised by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Guangzhou Municipal Government. It is the first enterprise group in South China to hold a special qualification for general contracting of housing construction engineering, a Class A design qualification of the construction industry, a special qualification for general contracting of municipal engineering construction, and a Class A design qualification of the municipal industry. GMC has 2 special qualifications for general contracting of construction, 44 Class I qualifications for general contracting of construction, 109 Class I qualifications for professional contracting, 33 Class A design qualifications, and 5 Class A qualifications for construction and municipal engineering supervision. The business scope includes housing and municipal infrastructure construction, engineering survey and design, mechanical and electrical installation, decoration, environmental protection engineering, landscaping engineering, engineering supervision, building materials trade, real estate development and management, engineering testing, new material research and development, human resources services and financial services, etc. The scope basically covers all professional areas of the construction industry and related supporting industrial chains.
In 2021, GMC achieved revenue of 249.1 billion yuan and a total profit of 4.82 billion yuan, ranking 460th among the Fortune 500 companies for the first time. In 2022, it was again selected as one of the Fortune 500 companies, jumping 100 spots to the 360th place. That marks another solid step towards building a world-class urban construction operator with international competitiveness.
Formerly known successively as Guangzhou State-owned Construction Engineering Company, Guangzhou Municipal Construction Engineering Bureau, and Guangzhou Municipal Construction Corporation, GMC was transformed into a limited company in 1996. In 2008, it was restructured and merged with Guangzhou Engineering Contractor Group Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Municipal Group Co., Ltd. into the new Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group Co., Ltd. In 2010, it incorporated China Guangzhou International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. In 2019, it incorporated 40 landscaping enterprises under Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Forestry and Landscaping and restructured Guangzhou Design Institute. GMC has strong technical advantages. At present, there are 45 high-tech enterprises, 2 research institutes, 7 Class A design institutes, 5 postdoctoral workstations, 2 postdoctoral innovative practice bases, 1 national technical center, 1 national engineering sub-center, 23 provincial engineering centers, and 12 provincial enterprise technology centers. GMC has won 6 national scientific and technological progress awards (including 5 second prizes and 1 third prize), 1 second prize of the national technological invention award, and 774 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress awards.
As the main force of Guangzhou's urban construction, GMC has undertaken the construction of most major infrastructure projects, livelihood projects, and landmark projects in various periods in Guangzhou, with a cumulative completed area of more than 90 million square meters, being eight times the area of the old Guangzhou City. GMC has successively undertaken a number of landmark projects such as Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, Baiyun International Convention Center, Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center, CITIC Plaza, Canton Tower, Guangzhou International Financial Center (also known as Guangzhou West Tower), Guangzhou Opera House, Municipal Traffic Project in the Core Area of Zhujiang New Town, and Haixinsha Square, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Guangzhou Asian Games. Moreover, GMC has won 40 Luban Prizes (the highest quality award in China's construction engineering field), 32 Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prizes, 47 National Municipal Golden Cup Demonstration Project Prizes, 57 National Quality Engineering Awards, and 43 National Excellent Landscape Engineering/Design Awards.
GMC enjoys distinct advantage in talent. At present, there are 223 enterprises with property rights registered in our system (including 42 enterprises with registered capital exceeding 100 million yuan), and about 20,000 employees, including more than 67% employees with bachelor's degrees or above; there are 10,496 professionals, including 2,045 persons with senior professional titles, 15 experts enjoying the special allowance of the State Council and one national engineering design master; there are 4,608 constructors, including 2,320 first-class constructors. The hard struggle of several generations of GMC workers has fostered the corporate spirit of "constructing thousands of buildings and creating beautiful scenery in the world" with dedication and hard work as the core, and love for the country with "contributing to the millennia-old Guangzhou and building it into a Pearl of Southern China" as our responsibility. Engaged in the rescues of the Wenchuan Earthquake and the Shenzhen "12.20 Landslide Accident", as well as in poverty alleviation in Kashgar, Xinjiang, and Bijie, Guizhou, GMC is known as the team "especially capable of fighting". In particular, GMC invested 2.5 billion yuan in the Guangzhou State-owned Industry Assistance Project for Xinjiang — the Guangzhou New City, covering an area of 650,000 square meters in Kashgar, Xinjiang, which is the largest trade and logistics industry platform in southern Xinjiang. The project has brought job opportunities for more than 5,000 local people and played a positive role in boosting poverty alleviation, economic development and improvement of people's wellbeing, known as "a banner of Guangdong Province aiding Xinjiang". In 2020, GMC undertook a series of emergency projects such as the earth leveling for Zhongluotan's purchased and reserved land and the expansion of Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital. It completed the construction tasks delivered by the superiors with high efficiency, high quality and high standards, and was awarded the "National Advanced Group in the Housing and Urban-rural Construction Development System for Combating the COVID-19", fully demonstrating the efficiency of GMC and its strong sense of responsibility as a state-owned enterprise. In 2021, when new resurgence of COVID-19 cases hit Guangzhou, GMC once again stood up to call for joint efforts to fight against the pandemic. We provided assistance for the emergency project of pandemic prevention and quarantine in Liwan District, built up a 66-kilometer line of defense against the pandemic in three days, and successively completed the reconstruction and expansion tasks of many emergency projects such as the Guangzhou International Health Hub, Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, Guangzhou Iron and Steel Enterprise Group Hospital, Baiyun International Convention Center, Dong Fang Hotel and Hotel Canton, contributing to winning the tough battle against the pandemic and strengthening regular pandemic prevention and control.
In 2021, GMC became the first Fortune Global 500 enterprise in the construction industry in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is striving to be a leading enterprise in industrial chains in the construction industry of Guangzhou with international influence, to record an operating revenue of 500 billion yuan and a total profit of 10 billion yuan by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period in 2025, and to become a world-class urban construction operator.
